Lysbeth

Hand built in mixed clay with glass eyes

Titled ‘Lysbeth’ after Lysbeth Reyniers, wife of Dutch painter Frans Hal, this original ceramic piece echoes the influence of 17th Century life – this is apparent due to the ruff worn around her neck. Instead of creating a detailed traditional neck collar, Coaten created a minimalist disk to allude to life at the time all while keeping the idol raw and vulnerable.
