Hand built in mixed clays. Glass eyes.

“I have a long-standing fascination with the human desire to make sense of existence through religion, myth and folklore and its use of art to create concrete images of worship in the forms of icons and idols.
My figurative studies are a mix of modern portraits and faces found within historical works, where some remain true to the initial sitter others have evolved. From portraits to large scale votives and secular reliquaries, all use the technique of giving prominence to the eyes using glass inlays.

Hand built from a mix of four clay bodies chosen for their strength, texture and colours, ‘Pip’ is a large portrait study comprising of two sections. This is the first large piece that I have chosen to leave in its raw, unglazed state, visceral and tactile.” – Alison Coaten
